Fight back against Trump’s authoritarian power grab
Fight back against Trump’s authoritarian power grab
Between arresting public officials and ICE detaining U.S. citizens, Trump has dangerously and chaotically escalated his authoritarian power grab. This weekend, communities across Oregon are standing up in a national day of defiance to send a clear message to Donald Trump: We don’t do kings in America. Learn more and attend an event in your community below.
STANDING UP TO TRUMP’S AUTHORITARIAN POWER GRAB
WHAT'S HAPPENING: Over the past week, communities across Los Angeles have been banding together to protect their immigrant neighbors from cruel, chaotic, and unfair ICE raids. While protests have largely been peaceful, Donald Trump continues to escalate tensions, unleashing National Guard troops and federal law enforcement – despite objections from California Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass.
On Thursday, California Senator Alex Padilla was forcibly removed and handcuffed at an LA press conference for daring to attempt to ask a question of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Meanwhile, Trump continues to threaten to arrest other public officials – including Governor Newsom – who stand up for their immigrant constituents. This comes just weeks after the Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested when he was peacefully standing outside of an ICE detention facility. Members of Congress were also accosted during Mayor Baraka’s arrest, and DHS has said that the arrest of those representatives were “on the table.” Last week, the President of SEIU-USWW was also assaulted and detained while advocating for immigrant workers. He was held for days in ICE custody despite being a United States citizen, born in California.
The targeting and arresting of public officials who oppose Trump’s blatant abuses of power is straight out of the authoritarian handbook. We must immediately act to tell the Trump administration to stop these arrests now.
HOW WE'RE FIGHTING BACK:
Take action now by sending an email to Trump administration officials to stop unfounded arrests of public officials.

INVESTING IN EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL
WHAT'S HAPPENING: This week, House Republicans on the Homeland Security committee escalated the Trump administration's increasingly desperate and legally dubious war on nonprofits. Seeking to intimidate organizations they deem a threat to Trump's cruel anti-immigrant agenda, the committee launched a so-called "probe" into more than 200 nonprofits across the country and sent out demand letters. If your organization received a letter, you can always reach out to the team at ACLU of Oregon for support: info@aclu-or.org
