Our best defense against Trump
Our best defense against Trump
In less than 100 days, Donald Trump and his unelected billionaire cronies have pushed a cruel and chaotic agenda — crashing the economy, threatening funding for vital services that keep us healthy and safe, and attacking our fundamental rights and values. Now, as Oregon lawmakers craft the biennium budget, we must make sure they stand up for communities and protect us from the federal chaos.
PROTECTING OREGON VALUES
WHAT'S HAPPENING: Right now, Oregon lawmakers are creating the 2025-2026 budget, determining funding for schools, healthcare, infrastructure projects, and more. With Trump and Elon Musk making wild and cruel threats to take away Medicaid, tank our local economies, and decimate programs that support our public schools and protect our air and water, the state budget could not be more critical. It’s our best defense against the federal chaos and the unelected billionaires who, in less than 100 days, have:
Threatened to slash funding for Medicaid, which provides desperately needed healthcare for those most in need.
Cut funding to the National Institute of Health, which jeopardizes tens of millions of dollars for local hospitals like OHSU to provide quality patient care and do vital medical research to improve patient outcomes.
Signed an executive order wrongfully saying there are only two genders, putting at risk the safety and health of trans people all over the country.
Carelessly laid off thousands of workers at the Department of Education and signed an executive order to shut down the department, threatening critical funding Oregon students rely on.
Issued a baseless executive order threatening states’ rights to tackle climate change.
Defied court orders to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported to a ruthless prison in El Salvador — along with hundreds of other immigrants — and repeatedly threatened to send U.S. citizens to prison in El Salvador.
Sloppily, and at times mistakenly, laid off hundreds of thousands of federal employees through Elon Musk’s DOGE.
Signed an executive order trying to singlehandedly ban vote-by-mail and take away the power, granted to states by the Constitution, to set the time, place, and manner for how elections are held.
Rolled out, rolled back, rolled out again, paused, doubled down, and then attempted to backtrack on disastrous and ill-conceived tariffs that have devastated the stock market and pushed the country to the brink of a major recession — and, despite all that, continues to engage in a retaliatory trade war with China.
With all of the chaos and uncertainty in Washington D.C., now is the time for Oregon lawmakers to reaffirm and protect Oregon values. While the White House seeks to enrich billionaires, Oregonians rallied outside the State Capitol earlier this week to tell members of Congress to keep their #HandsOffMedicaid and urge state lawmakers in Salem to craft a state budget that protects our families and invests in our communities.
#HandsOffMedicaid rally in Salem - April 16, 2025HOW WE'RE FIGHTING BACK:
Submit testimony today to tell the co-chairs of the Ways & Means Committee to craft a budget that invests in Oregon – not hand new tax cuts to corporations and the ultra-wealthy.
